KVLY-TV TOWER TRIVIA

The KVLY-TV tower is the tallest man-made structure in North America, and until recently was the tallest such structure in the entire world.  The KVLY-TV tower is 2,063 feet high, and was recently surpassed by the "Burj Dubai" building, which reaches 2,625 feet in the air.  The KVLY-TV tower serves an area larger than the combined areas of Rhode Island, District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut with 1,000 square miles to spare.

The KVLY-TV tower contains more than two million feet of steel, guy wire strands and elevator cable. The tower and guy anchors take up 160 acres of space.

There are 14 levels of lights on the tower.  Seven levels are flashing code beacons, spaced 300 feet apart and seven levels of three obstruction lights at each level, one on each leg of the tower.

The antenna on top of the tower is 113 feet high and weighs 9,000 pounds.  The steel tower is taller than the combined heights of the Great Pyramid Khufu at Gizeh, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Washington Monument.

If the KVLY-TV tower had its’ base at the bottom of the Royal Gorge in the Grand Canyon, the antenna would still be 563 feet above the upper rim.

If a 20 second commercial started at the same moment a baseball was dropped from the top of the KVLY-TV tower; it would have ended nearly 4 seconds before the ball hit the ground.

In a 70 mile per hour wind, the beacon light on top of the KVLY-TV tower will move approximately ten feet.

If an iron worker on the antenna dropped his wrench, it would be traveling at a speed of 250 miles per hour when it hit the ground.

If a hunter at the base of the KVLY-TV tower shot at the lead goose flying near the top of the tower with a 45 caliber pistol, he would have to lead the goose by more than the length of a football field, or approximately 335 feet.

The tower was assembled in 33 working days by an 11-man crew with no casualties.

The total weight of steel in the tower is 864,500 pounds.  The total length of guy wires is 40,125 feet, or 7.6 miles.  The elevator cable used in construction of the tower is 7,870 feet.

The KVLY-TV tower is located near Blanchard, ND

 KXJB-TV4 TOWER TRIVIA

The KXJB-TV4 tower is located near Galesburg, ND.  The KX4-TV tower is the third largest manmade structure in America.  The KX4-TV tower is 2060 feet.

February 14, 1968, the KX4-TV tower was taken down when a military helicopter hit the guy wires.  All men in the chopper died.  April 5, 1997 at 6:09pm, the KX4-TV tower fell again; this time due to ice.  The new and current tower was completed August, 1998.
